D-Region Absorption
Highlighted areas are worse for HF conditions, very high attenuation = no sky-wave radio communication is possible in that area.

Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) HF
If a transmitter's frequency exceeds the MUF anywhere along the path between it and the receiver the signal will escape into outer space rather than be reflected back toward Earth.

This the area currently lit by the sun. Enhanced propagation (grey-line) is often possible along the perimeter (sunright on right, sunset on left)

This is the area visible from the moon.
